About Gandhi Ji (or Gandhi g as most people say)

Born on 2nd October 1869 in a small coastal town, Mahatma Gandhi has always been a legend for us. Fondly called Bapu or father of India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (MK Gandhi) was the youngest of all the three sons of Putlibai and Karamchand. Gandhi completed his primary education in Porbandar and achieved the higher education at Albert High School, Rajkot.  The place where Gandhiji was born is now known as Kirti Mandir.

 About Gandhi Jayanti

Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three most important national events in India (other two are Republic Day and Independence Day).  It is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi Jayanti is mainly celebrated to pay honor to Mahatma Gandhi who struggled a lot for the Indian independence from the British rule. One of the great importance of 2nd October is- it is also known as the International Day of Non-Violence. The United Nation General Assembly decided on 15th June 2007 to implement the same.

2nd October has been declared as a national holiday by the Government of India.  All schools, colleges, companies, etc. remain closed on this day. Every year, this day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Considered as one of the historical occasions, all the bad activities like ‘selling alcohols’ etc. is strictly prohibited as Gandhiji was always against smoking and drinking liquor

A lot of preparations are done prior to the event. Various campaigns take place to spread public awareness all over the world. A majority of activities include- prayers, a tribute by the government officials at Raj Ghat, New Delhi. Prayer meetings and commemorative ceremonies are also organized. On the themes like non-violence and Gandhi’s effort in Indian Freedom struggle, various activities like drama, play and speech recitation are taken place in schools, colleges, and other educational institutes. At first, the cremation place is decorated with garlands and flowers. Then, the homage is paid to our great leader by placing the wreath. Religious players are also sung in the morning at the Samadhi followed by his favorite bhajan “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram.”

According to Gandhiji, truth and non-violence are the only tools to win independence. He also went to jail many times. Mahatma Gandhi always used to believe in social equality and also against untouchability.

Gandhiji has become a role model and an inspirational leader for the youth now. Other great leaders like Nelson Mandela, James Lawson also admired Gandhi’s theory of non-violence for the freedom and liberty. Gandhi did a great work to achieve Swaraj. He also improved the economic condition of farmers and also abolished other social evils like untouchability. He also supported women empowerment.

Gandhi also lead various movements such as Non-Cooperation  Movement (1920), Dandi March (1930) and Quit India Movement (1942). All these movements were highly successful and were supported by youth greatly.

Role of Mahatma Gandhi in Indian National Movement for Independence

One of the greatest and the most successful movements led by Gandhiji was the Champaran Movement.
When Mahatma Gandhi returned to India, he came to know about the problems, peasants were facing. Champaran is a small district situated in Northern Bihar. Here, the peasants were forced to grow indigo on their smaller pieces if land even if it was not possible to do so. In fact, the peasants were bearing huge losses by cultivating indigo on their fertile lands.
Gandhi also led the struggle for the poor peasants to increase in their wages and got success in it as well. There was an increase of 35% in their wages after the movement.


The aim of celebrating Gandhi Jayanti is to distribute Gandhi’s philosophy, principles & thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi and believe in non-violence around the World. In these ways, we pay a heartily tribute to our leader every year.
